A Kerry County Councillor is calling for those who dump illegally to be ‘named and shamed’.
Fine Gael Cllr Bobby O’Connell was contacted by a constituent in Cordal after twenty bags of rubbish were discovered in a remote beauty spot.
Cllr O’Connell discovered at least one of the perpetrators had been identified by Kerry County Council and the individual in question paid a fine.
However the Castleisland councilor – who tabled a motion on the issue at yesterday’s meeting of Killarney Municipal District – says a fine is simply not enough.
Yesterday’s meeting heard the Data Protection Agency had advised Kerry County Council that ‘naming and shaming’ wasn’t feasible due to, what they described as, ‘data protection issues’.
But Cllr O’Connell says dumpers need to be publicly shamed.
