A Sinn Féin councillor claims there is a disconnect between Kerry County Council’s housing and planning departments because of the types of units being built.
Toireasa Ferris says although 72pc of people on the housing list are single, requiring one or two-bedroom units, these are not available.
She said there was no private supply of these types of houses or apartments available to Kerry County Council yet only one in three people on the housing list requires a three-bedroom house.
Cllr Ferris also highlighted the issue of over-crowding where several members of the one family and their children were sharing a three-bedroom house with their parents and other siblings.
She says many of these people aren’t officially classed as homeless but are badly in need of accommodation.
