Kerry County Council says it has mistakenly written to hundreds of people telling them their name has been removed from the Register of Electors.
The council admitted the clerical error after a large number of voters received the correspondence this morning. Revisions to the Register of Electors are a usual occurrence at this time of the year ahead of the annual publication of the voting register in February. The council writes to electors if they have moved away or are not living in the locality any more to ensure the voting list is accurate. Over the last few days, several hundred people – mainly in the south Kerry area – received a letter saying they were being removed from the register. A spokesperson for Kerry County Council says however that this was a clerical error. He says that they know who received the letters and will write to them to clarify the situation. The spokesperson says that those who received the correspondence won’t be removed from the register and do not have to do anything to rectify the situation. Cllr Danny Healy-Rae said he was concerned about what had occurred.
