It’s expected to be late September by the time Kerry County Council gets the go ahead to build 20 houses in Killarney.
There’s been criticism of the slow movement on the project; planning permission for eight houses for The Park, Killarney was originally granted in 2008.Planning permission was initially granted for eight houses at The Park, Killarney in November 2008; this was increased to 20 houses in May of last year, with an estimated cost of €3.6 million.
In February this year funding of €3.3 million was allocated by the Department of the Environment, leaving a €270,000 shortfall – the council then had to revise its costs.
These have all been approved, and the council is now procuring Quantity Surveyor Services. Following the appointment, contract documents will be prepared and approved, before being submitted to tender.Kerry County Council expects to receive approval from the Department by the 23rd of September when the contractor can start construction.Councillor John Joe Culloty raised the issue at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, saying the delay on building the houses is unacceptable, and shows a lack of empathy for people in need of social housing.
