A campaign has been launched in Kerry to encourage unemployed people to think differently about volunteering.

The Consider Volunteering Campaign is being run by the Kerry Volunteer Centre, and supported by Kerry County Council.

The Consider Volunteering Campaign coincides with National Volunteering Week, which begins today in Kerry with a Valuing Volunteering Coffee Morning in the Tralee Bay Wetlands at 11 o’clock this morning; events will also be held all over the county during the week.

Kerry Volunteer Centre Manager, Geraldine Sheehan says the volunteering campaign highlights the significant personal benefits unemployed people can gain from volunteering locally.

She adds that it tackles the real and perceived barriers to volunteering, including the fact that there’s no impact on Jobseekers Allowance from volunteering.

She says that in a time where local job opportunities are scarce, volunteering can be an ideal way for many to keep their skill sets sharp, retain and build self-confidence, keep active, sustain emotional wellbeing, while making a valuable contribution to the community.
