The head of an organisation representing carers in the county says that carers are again being overlooked by political parties ahead of the general election.
Karen Gearon was speaking following the amalgamation of the Carers’ Association and Caring for Carers’ Ireland into a new unified body.
Family Carers’ Ireland now represents thousands of people who care for a loved one in the home.
Karen Gearon says that a lot of carers haven’t been identified because they don’t necessarily see themselves as being family carers.
She says the organisation is very concerned about pension rights for those she represents.
And she says carers aren’t on the agenda ahead of the forthcoming election, mainly because they cannot mobilise like other sectors:
