Retired Supreme Court judge Hugh O’Flaherty wants ‘The Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell to be commemorated in Leinster House.
The former justice says O’Connell’s portrait hangs in one of the committee rooms only and not in the main vestibule of Leinster House.
Writing in today’s Irish Independent Mr O’Flaherty says O’Connell had no sense of false modesty and would not be happy his portrait is relegated to a side room.
Mr O’Flaherty, who is a nephew of the Cahirsiveen-born humanitarian cleric Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, is a keynote speaker at the annual Daniel O’Connell Summer School this weekend.
He will deliver his opening address at Cahersiveen Library on Friday morning.
The two-day summer school will also be addressed by Professor Daire Keogh, President of St Patrick’s College of Education, Professor Michael Murphy, President of UCC, and Ireland’s Ambassador to Great Britain, Dan Mullhall. Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan will deliver the closing address at Derrynane House, O’Connell’s former home, on Saturday evening.
