« BackCall for oldest Blasket Islander to be commemorated by preservation of island

The last child born on the Great Blasket Island has said the most fitting way to commemorate Dr Míchéal Ó Cearna is to preserve the island.

Míchéal Ó Cearna or Mike Carney, who was the oldest surviving Blasket Islander, passed away at Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday. He was 94. He left the Blaskets as a teenager in 1937 before emigrating to America in 1948. His autobiography, ‘From the Great Blasket to America – The Last Memoir of a Blasket Islander’ was published in 2013. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by NUI Maynooth in 2010 in recognition of his contribution to Irish heritage. Gearóid Cheaist Ó Catháin, who was the last baby born on the island, said Maidhc had attended Blasket commemorations in west Kerry every year:
