« BackCall for monument to be erected for Munster Fusiliers who died in Etreux

There’s been a call for a monument to be erected in Tralee for the Munster Fusiliers who lost their lives in France in 1914.

Today marks the 99th anniversary of the deaths of hundreds of men, including 10 from Kerry, who held up a German Army corps for 24 hours during a retreat from Mons.

Royal Munster FusiliersA memorial is being held in Cork tonight to mark the anniversary, and the Royal Munster Fusiliers Association is travelling to France next year to mark the centenary.

Colette Collins, who’s originally from Tralee, says 10 Kerry man died in Etreux, and one subsequently died as a prisoner of war; yet they are unknown in Tralee.
