A Tralee councillor is calling for an explanation as to why an historic holy well was damaged by the council.
Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly claims unlawful works were undertaken by Kerry County Council at Sunday’s Well in Tralee, and says ISIS wouldn’t have tried to do what the council did, referring to their destruction of the World Heritage Site at Palmyra last year.
Sunday’s Well dates back to pagan times, and it’s said to be the pure crystal fountain from the Rose of Tralee song.
Kerry County Council says there’s a public safety issue with the well as a child had fallen into it, and also notes that rubbish was being dumped in it.
The local authority intends to put a grid on top of the well, and also feels that their work on the arch over the well will improve it.
However, Cllr Daly says the council destroyed the well and arch above it, and wants to know why this happened.
