Brendan Howlin has said he “absolutely” hopes Arthur Spring will be a part of the regeneration of the Labour Party.
Arthur Spring was first elected as a TD in the North Kerry – West Limerick constituency in 2011.
He lost his seat in the last election in the new five-seat Kerry Constituency.
Deputy Howlin said politics was a cruel business and many fine, capable TDs had lost their seats – conceding hard decisions in Government may have alienated voters.
He said while the decision is Arthur’s to make, he hopes he will be part of the party’s future – adding the Spring tradition in Kerry is entwined with Labour’s social democratic values.
