Gas Networks Ireland has told Kerry County Council it hopes to develop a gas network in Listowel.
It has requested that the Council allow for the advance provision of a gas main, though its proposals are at a very early stage in development.
Gas Networks Ireland, formerly Bord Gais, says that the provision of a gas network is subject to many other considerations by their board, including funding.
Kerry County Council also had proposals to upgrade the water services infrastructure in Listowel, which is managed by Gas Networks Ireland’s parent company Ervia.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) which is funding road improvement works at William Street in Listowel has committed funding, solely for the road reconstruction, conditional on the works being executed in the current year.
Charlie O’Sullivan, Director of Services at Kerry County Council, said it would be desirable to facilitate the gas utility’s request, but that he will have to protect the council’s interest in ensuring that there is no financial exposure to the local authority.
Kerry County Council is currently in consultation with these parties, to ensure the most effective outcome.
However, it still has a target to have road works begun immediately after Listowel Race week and complete by the end of November.
