Church candlesThe body of a Portuguese fisherman who died after falling overboard off the Kerry coast is to be repatriated this week.

The 54-year-old father of three from Porto fell overboard from a Dingle-based trawler around 170 miles off the coast in the Porcupine Basin last Thursday.

The man had arrived in Ireland in April; his brother was also working abroad the trawler.

A funeral mass was held for the man yesterday in St Mary’s Church in Dingle and was attended by members of the fishing community and local people.

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board says it is aware of the incident and is making further inquiries.

If the incident comes under its statutory remit it will investigate and issue a report.
