court gavel book from PixabayA Bangladeshi man has appeared before Tralee District Court charged with having an asylum seeker working illegally in his shop.

The court heard an emigration officer found the man working in the shop last year.


Mafigul Islam of 20 Saill Ardan, Park Road, Killarney runs an Asian grocery shop at 25 Lower Castle Street Tralee and has no previous convictions.

Tralee District Court was told an emigration officer arrived to the shop on December 10th 2015 where she found Anwar Hossain; an asylum seeker from Bangladesh working illegally.

Counsel for Mr Islam said the two men knew each other and the accused had asked the man to mind the shop while he went to the garage to get a bulb fixed on his car.

Judge James O’Connor said when one person is employed like this another person is out of a job.

Mr Islam offered to pay €1,000 to the court poor box to avoid conviction.

The case was adjourned until December 7th.
