The mother of a Ballybunion woman with Down Syndrome, who was sexually assaulted ten years ago, says her daughter is still haunted by what happened to her.
Anne Kelly, whose daughter Laura was assaulted at a party in Meath in 2006, was speaking about the case before the courts this week, whereby a Pakistani man was jailed for 13 years for raping a woman with Downs.
Mrs Kelly welcomed the sentencing of the man yesterday, and praised the judge for his ruling and his comments.
But she says the widespread media coverage of the case, highlights for her family the fact that Laura’s attacker was never brought to justice, after a court ruled she not competent enough to give evidence.
She says that while her daughter is generally a happy girl, she still suffers from flashbacks of the night she was attacked:
