The Ardfert Sewerage Scheme has gone out to tender.
Engineer with Kerry County Council Colm Mangan told the Tralee Municipal District meeting that it is hoped works will begin in the autumn.
The green light was given to the 2.6 million euro scheme in 2012.
The existing foul and surface water sewer systems in Ardfert, which were constructed in the 1960s, are at capacity, and are not functioning adequately.
The proposed works include network improvements and a new treatment plant to the north of the village.
