« BackArchaeologist believes Skellig Michael at risk of another rock slide

Skelligs Rock Fall 2An archaeologist is saying that he fears there could be another rock slide on Skellig Michael like the one that happened recently.

Michael Gibbons who has been visiting the island for past 30 years says he has never seen the ‘burn back’ of vegetation so bad.

A combination of the recent warm weather and a large colony of nesting puffins ‘drilling in’ and eating the vegetation, is causing the ground to become unstable according to the archaeologist.

The tourism season has got off to a very busy start with large numbers visiting Skelligs Michael after the monastic site featured on Star Wars.

The area that Mr Gibbons says is of particular risk is near the existing cover way and he believes this should be extended to offer protection from falling stones for walkers:
