« BackAnnual Kerry Way Ultra Marathon attracts world attention

Donnacha Cassidy, Killarney, on The Kerry Way Ultra 200Km non stop marathon left Killarney at dawn on Friday morning.The 40 hour non stop race, traverses the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Iveragh Peninsula, stretching along The Wild Atlantic Way, along ancient trails and old roads and coastal cliffs.Photo:Valerie O’Sullivan/FREE PICS*Athletes travelled from all over the world to compete in this year’s annual Kerry Way Ultra and Ultra Lite Marathons.

The annual 200 KM gruelling non stop endurance race, departed Killarney, at dawn on Friday morning and fifty two Elite runners raced solidly for 40 hours.

Their epic journey of The Kerry Way, was closely tracked online by over 75,000 people and took in areas such as the Black Valley, the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, and the Iveragh Peninsula.

Barry Brennan from Dublin, became the first runner home in a time of 26 hrs and 53 minutes, followed in second place by Killarney’s Donnacha Cassidy, while Theresa Majeed won the Ladies.

This year also saw a new race added called The Kerry Way Ultra Lite Marathon with a distance of 55Km, which was won by Robert McEvoy and Claire Morrissey.
