« BackAlmost half a million euro recovered from welfare cheats in Kerry last year

Almost half a million euro in suspected fraud over-payments were recovered in Kerry last year.

That’s according to figures from the Department of Social Protection, revealed in a Dáil reply.

Department of Social ProtectionNationally, 21,400 fraudulent over-payments totalling €49 million were made last year; this represents 6,000 fewer than 2014.

€26.7 million of these over-payments were recovered from suspected welfare cheats last year, almost €540,000 of that was in Kerry.

The largest proportion nationally was in Job Seekers Allowance, over €11 million was recovered from people who had defrauded the State in bogus entitlements.

The was followed by over €3 million each in non-contributory state pension and one-parent family fraudulent payments.

The statistics were provided by the Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar in a written Dáil reply to independent Tipperary TD, Mattie McGrath.
