« BackSpanish trawler runs aground on Bere Island

1pm – A Spanish fishing vessel ran aground on Bere Island this morning with 11 people on board. The 36m Nuevo Ria Aldan hit the island at around 5am and a rescue operation was launched by the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre on Valentia island.  The centre despatched the Castletown Bere lifeboat, pilot boat and coastguard unit to the scene.  The Shannon-based coastguard helicoptor was also alerted.  However, the local units managed to get all 11 crew members to safety.  No-one was injured in the incident and an attempt to refloat the boat will be made at high tide at around 3.30pm
