Residents on Muckross Road, Killarney want road works stopped until their safety concerns have been addressed. Residents are also critical of the traffic chaos that they claim the road works will cause. A public meeting is taking place on Thursday to discuss why the works must be stopped and if possible reversed. The council says the need for a traffic calming scheme was identified in a national survey of accident locations by Transport infrastructure Ireland – formerly the NRA. There is an exceptionally high record of accidents on the Muckross Road, with 28 accidents over a 12 year period. There was also a pedestrian fatality on this section of road in 1995. The proposals include for the reduction of the carriageway to 6.5m with a 3m combined footpath/cycleway on either side and improved lighting. Construction of the scheme began in early 2015 and the works are substantially complete.
