A major new project to improve the water quality in the river Shannon will be discussed at a meeting in Tralee tonight. A management plan for the river basin must be prepared under new environmental legislation. Under EU law all waters must be “good” or “high” quality by 2015 and as a result Ireland has been split into 8 river basin districts. The Shannon river basin is the largest in Ireland and has a total area of 18 thousand kilometers squared. As part of the preparation of the new management plan the public are being asked for their input and a meeting will be held in the Brandon tonight.
