It may be the weekend before workers at Intel know the extent of job cuts at the company. Internationally Intel is laying off 12,000 workers as it changes its business plan.
There’s a nervous wait ahead for workers at Intel as they wait to discover the full extent of job losses. 5,500 people work for the company in Ireland with the majority of the job losses expected at their European headquarters in Kildare. Intel is expected to brief some staff this evening – but Independent Councillor for Leixlip Bernard Caldwell says we won’t know the full extent of the losses for a few more days. The company is restructuring to move away from selling computer chips for PCs. Instead it will focus on more profitable industries. Intel is cutting 12,000 jobs worldwide and that will affect Ireland. But they say that the plants in Leixlip, Cork and Shannon remain essential to the future of the company. Some staff are reportedly being briefed this afternoon – however it could be days before the full extent of the job losses are known.
