Martin O’ Neill Names His Euro 2016 Squad

FAI_CrestIreland’s Euro 2016 squad will return to training this morning after Martin O’Neill finalised his 23-man panel last night. The likes of David Forde, Darron Gibson and David McGoldrick will all be leaving Cork this morning after failing to make the tournament squad, while the rest of the players will hold a work-out at the FOTA Island Resort. Despite starting the campaign as Ireland’s first-choice goalkeeper, Forde has lost-out to the in-form Kieran Westwood while team captain Robbie Keane has also been included despite an on-going calf injury. Martin O’ Neill says he has made the call on the panel and it’s now time to prepare for the championships……. Despite dominating for long periods of time, the home side conceded two sloppy goals – one in either half – before Stephen Ward pulled a goal back. The only other positive for the Irish fans in the crowd was the international debut of Oxford’s Calum O’Dowda. Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin won a late call-up to the 23-man France squad last night. He’s in the group for the tournament hosts, because former Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra has a knee injury. The deadline for countries to name their squads has now passed. ======= Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin is going to Euro 2016 with Spain – having been excluded from the initial selection. He replaces Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal who was injured in Saturday’s Champions League final win over Atletico Madrid. Five other Premier League players are involved – including Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas. ======= Championship side Leeds are looking for a new manager this morning – after Steve Evans was sacked last night. It’s after days of speculation over the future of the former Rotherham boss – who lasted nearly eight months in the job. In a statement, Leeds owner Massimo Cellino thanked him for his efforts and said Evans had met his targets for the season. The club’s looking for its seventh permanent boss in just over two years under the Italian’s ownership.
