Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris is calling on Government TDs in Kerry to “stand up for lone parents” by supporting his party’s bill to reverse the imminent cut to the single parents’ allowance. Deputy Ferris is urging the Labour Party’s Arthur Spring TD as well as Fine Gael’s Jimmy Deenihan and Brendan Griffin, to do, what he says, is the “right thing” by voting for the Sinn Féin bill in the Dáil. Deputy Ferris says the cut is terribly vindictive and local government TDs can play an important role in reversing it by supporting the Sinn Féin Bill. The Sinn Fein deputy says single parent families are twice as likely as two parent households to live in consistent poverty. He says the government’s response to this reality is to cut what is a vital financial support to people who are often doing the job of both a mother and a father. He also says it is utterly despicable that Enda Kenny has attempted to justify this cut by suggesting that such payments are the cause of poverty.
