Man who threatened shop assistants with hatchet in Tralee still being detained by Gardai

Gardai are continuing to question a man in his 40s following a robbery at a Tralee service station last night, in which staff were threatened with a hatchet. Garda Station sign The incident happened at Kelliher’s Toyota Car Sales at Rathass. At about 20 past 8 last night, a man carrying a hatchet demanded money from staff at the Inver convenience store, located on the forecourt of Kelliher’s Car Sales. After threatening shop assistants with the hatchet, he escaped on foot with a sum of money, but was arrested by Gardai a short time later. The hatchet was recovered in a follow-up search. The man, who’s in his early 40s, is currently being detained at Tralee Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Gardai are appealing for information from the public with their investigation, which they say is at an early stage. They’ve asked anyone who was in the Rathass area at around 8.20pm last night, who may have information useful to their investigation, to contact Tralee Garda station.
