A man’s been arrested after a high speed chase through Killarney ended in a crash in a residential estate. The man in his early 30s is being questioned at Killarney garda station. He’s being held under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act and will be detained overnight. At around 2pm, gardaí received a report that a white commercial van was stolen in Keel, Castlemaine. Gardai organised a checkpoint at Beaufort Bridge where a driver of a vehicle, matching the description of the stolen van, refused to stop. The vehicle fled towards Killarney and was seen driving on the wrong side of the road in Park Road and Muckross Road. Gardaí boxed the van in on a number of occasions and the vehicle mounted the kerb at the Ballydowney Roundabout. The 20 minute chase ended around 3pm when gardaí mounted a roadblock and the driver of the van crashed into the garden wall of a house in the Woodlawn Estate. The driver wasn’t injured. Killarney gardaí along with colleagues from Killorglin as well as the divisional traffic corps and the district drugs unit were involved in the operation.
