A Listowel garda was assaulted by a number of men armed with hurleys when he attempted to make an arrest. The garda, who was uninjured in the attack, managed to obtain one of the hurleys and items of clothing, which will now be forensically tested for DNA and prints. It follows the foiling of a burglary in the town yesterday when the garda chased the suspects on foot before they made their escape in a black Audi A3. Gardai believe the gang has been travelling around Kerry and bordering counties targeting vacant homes. A garda assaulted with hurleys in Listowel on Thursday managed to obtain a hurley, baseball cap and other items of clothing that are now being forensically examined. The garda interrupted the gang as they attempted to break into a house and gave chase on foot when they fled the scene. While attempting to arrest one of the men, the garda was approached by four others brandishing hurleys, who threatened and assaulted him. He was unhurt. Gardai also have CCTV footage of the getaway car, a black Audi A3 with tinted back windows that was waiting on the John B Keane Road and sped off on the Tarbert Road in the direction of west Limerick. Gardai are warning homeowners to be vigilant, particularly if they are approached by people offfering to carry out work on their property.They also advise homeowners to secure their homes if they are away.
