Land adjacent to St. Finan’s Hospital is one of the locations being considered for a new community nursing unit in Killarney.
Under the HSE Capital Plan 2016-2021, funding is being provided for the new unit to replace St.Columbanus Home and Killarney District Hospital.
Responding to a query issued by Cllr John Joe Cullotty, the Regional Health Forum South meeting heard the HSE has met with Kerry County Council with regards to St Finan’s campus.
The meeting heard it’s envisaged the HSE will continue to develop part of St Finan’s campus to meet its requirements in relation to its Older Persons accommodation programme.
In relation to the remainder of the campus the HSE has asked Kerry County Council to identify whether the site offers any strategic opportunities to the local authority in relation to their requirements.
There are two services currently housed at St Finan’s Hospital site at Cluain Fhionnáin and the O’Connor Unit.
A detailed plan is being put in place to support remaining residents in Cluain Fhionnáin – a residential facility for people with intellectual disability – to move to smaller residential units in community settings.
The needs of O’Connor Unit- a residential facility for people with enduring mental health needs – is to be met with the opening of the new Deer Lodge Mental Health Unit in Killarney.
