Voters in Kerry cast 7% of their first preference votes for female candidates. Three women contested the General Election in the Kerry Constituency; Norma Moriarty of Fianna Fáil, Grace O’Donnell, Fine Gael and Independent Mary Fitzgibbon. Norma Moriarty received 4,348 first preferences and has been widely credited on her performance. Fine Gael’s Grace O’Donnell received 776 first preferences while Independent Mary Fitzgibbon received 635. The percentage of women in the 32nd Dáil will hit a record high according to Suzanne Collins, Director of Operations for ‘Women for Election’. She said the gender quota for selection was successful in getting more women on the ticket.
