Kerry traveller hails documentary as most accurate depiction of being a traveller

A Kerry traveller has hailed a documentary on the actor John Connors as being the most accurate depiction of being a traveller in Ireland. Martin Mahon The ‘I am Traveller’ programme was broadcast on television last night, and featured Dublin actor John Connors, who has starred in many films and television series including Love Hate and Charlie. The show highlighted that the suicide rate among travellers is six times higher, that there’s an 80 per cent unemployment rate in the community; and it also dealt with the fallout from the Carrickmines tragedy. Tralee representative of the traveller community Martin Mahon says John Connors depicted what it’s like to be a traveller – a mixture of pride, rage, and shame; and that’s exactly how he feels.
