Kerry TD claims levy on tyres will force people to buy outside of State

michael healy rae TD kerry south Motorists could face hikes of up to €14 on the price of a set of tyres under a new waste tyre levy being proposed by Environment Minister Alan Kelly. That’s according to Independent TD for South Kerry, Michael Healy-Rae, who says the new levy being considered could also put 1,000 jobs at stake across the country. Deputy Healy-Rae says the Producer Responsibility Initiative (PRI) could end up costing farmers and hauliers between €10 and €40 per tyre, forcing them to buy tyres outside the country to avoid the tax. He claims this could put as many as 1,000 jobs at risk and increase the number of people travelling to Northern Ireland to buy tyres.
