A meeting is to take place between Bus Éireann and a group of private contractors in Kerry later this month. The issue led to a protest involving 40 buses in Castleisland in February. Private bus operators are claiming that a state subsidised company has an unfair advantage when it comes to submitting tenders to operate school transport services. Kerry Flyer, a Castleisland-based not-for-profit, social enterprise company, has successfully tendered for a number of school bus services. Kerry Flyer’s denied that it has an unfair advantage and says it’s a licensed bus operator just like the private bus companies. It says the assertion that it won contracts through state subsidies is not correct and that its commercial work subsidisies its community activities – not the other way round. The tender process is to be discussed at a meeting between Bus Eireann and private contractors organised by Kerry TD Brendan Griffin on April 29th at the Earl of Desmond Hotel, Tralee.
