Kerry man steps down as General Secretary of Union.

Moyvane native Con Scanlon is to resign as General Secretary of the Communications Workers Union. In a statement the Union says Mr Scanlon has decided to step down from his post in three months time. Mr Scanlon represents the employees share option trust in Eircom known as Escot. Over the next 10 years he is to receive pension payments from Eirocm worth 1 million euro.When the company re-floated on the stock exchange he earned 560,000 euro and is also entitled to annual directors fees of 106,000 euro. Mr Scanlon is 50 years of age and was the first General Secretary of the Communications Workers Union. He joined the Department of Posts and Telegraphs in 1970 as a trainee technician. He became President of the Union on five consecutive occasions.
