Kerry County Council admits CPO affected support for south Kerry greenway

Kerry County Council admits using a compulsory purchase order to acquire lands for a greenway has caused a number of landowners to withdraw support for the project. CPO GreenwayFunding of around three-and-a-half million euro has been secured for the 26 kilometre proposed greenway from Caherciveen to Glenbeigh. The council says it remains open to speak with any concerned landowner. Around 170 parcels of land will be affected by this greenway project, which Kerry County Council says has the potential to bring millions of euro to the local economy. The local authority says funding for the project must drawn down before the end of the year. Senior Engineer in the Capital Infrastructure Unit with Kerry County Council Tom Sheehy says the decision to proceed using a CPO was not taken lightly: There is support for the project locally, however, dozens of landowners, homeowners and farmers have raised concerns about the route, a risk of criminality and a lack of consultation, which the council rejects. Farmer Jim Sheahan is one of those who are concerned: [audio_player src=””]
