Kerry councillors condemn new CAP proposals excluding part time farmers

Members of Kerry County Council have condemned proposals which could see part time farmers excluded from the new Common Agricultural Policy.

Fianna Fail Cllr Michael O’Shea tabled a motion said objections should be sent to both EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan and Agriculture Minister Michael Creed.

Cllr O’Shea said many farmers have no choice but to work off farm to support their families as their holding is small, adding it is difficult to define who or what is a part time farmer.

Cllr Dan McCarthy seconded the motion saying that most farming in south Kerry is part time and farming is in trouble as it is without this proposal.
