Kerry councillor calls for extension for gorse burning as limits are unworkable

A Kerry councillor is calling for a one month extension for gorse burning, saying the current time limits are unworkable. It’s illegal for land owners to burn between the 1st of March and 31st of August. The recent mild weather resulted in several wild fires taking hold in different parts of the county, with some coming dangerously close to property. Last week the Department of Agriculture issued a warning about the risk of forest fires, calling for vigilance. Independent Kenmare Councillor Dan McCarthy says he’s been contacted by several land owners about the March 1st deadline, saying it’s unworkable with our weather. dan_mccarthy   [audio_player src=””]
