The President of the Institute of Technology in Tralee says the proposed merger of the IT with Cork Institute of Technology into a Munster Technological University will not lead to job losses. Dr Oliver Murphy says the door remains open to the Teachers’ Union of Ireland to discuss the implications of a merger, which he says will enhance the Tralee college. The TUI has claimed the merger is being proposed to attain cost cuts and will lead to redundancies and redeployment of staff from Kerry to Cork. Its members are to be balloted on industrial action over its ‘grave concerns’ about the Technological Universities Bill. But Dr Murphy says it is a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ to attain university designation.
