The planning process should be taken out of the hands of Councillors to protect the Irish language according to an Irish speaking activist. Fergal Mac Aomhlaoimh says the County Council cannot buy land or build in the Gaeltacht as the cost of land has risen so much.He says native speakers who are in need of council housing are forced to move out of the Gaeltacht region and live in English speaking areas. According to Mr Mac Aomhlaoimh property developers are receiving planning permission to build all over the Gaeltacht with no concern for the language. He says Councillors should not have as much in put in the planning process.
