Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune has welcomed tougher proposals for those operating drones near Irish airports.
New proposals from the European Parliament has called for unmanned drones of over 250 grams to be registered.
The move follows a number of incidents involving lightweight drones and passenger aircraft, including a near-miss with an Aer Lingus flight from Paris to Dublin.
MEP Clune, a member of the EU Transport Committee, said drone operation also presents a safety issue for regional airports such as Kerry Airport in Farranfore.
The Fine Gael MEP says Gardaí and security services should have access to list of registered owners to ensure drones are not used to target commercial airliners.
