Kerry County Council has become the first local authority to be lobbied for support by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ proposed charter for conditions of fair employment. ICTU is seeking a national consensus about what fair conditions in work are. The group has already spoken to TDs, Senators and MEPs about campaign with 125 stating they support the charter. The charter is based on five principles: a living wage (€11.50 per hour), fair hours of work, right to representation and collective bargaining, respect, equality and ethics at work and fair public procurement. Support was expressed by councillors across the political divide. Cllrs Johnny Healy-Rae and Sam Locke also said that unions should disassociate themselves from political parties.
