The deaths of two newborn babies at Cavan General Hospital are being investigated. Cavan general Hospital has seen a spate of infant deaths in recent years, with staffing levels questioned. Investigations are underway at Cavan General Hospital’s maternity unit where two newborns have died in the space of five days. Last Wednesday a newborn baby died at the hospital aged just one day old, with reports the death was unexpected. And just yesterday, a second infant died after the mother got into difficulty in labour. It’s understood an emergency caesarean was ordered, but it’s unclear whether the operation was carried out. Spokespeople for the HSE and the hospital, say they can’t comment on individual cases, however investigations are underway. Last year a review carried out at Cavan General Hospital following a spate of infant deaths found a lack of consultants at the Maternity Unit.
