HSE expects 40-bed mental health unit in Killarney to open next year

It is anticipated newly constructed Deer Lodge Mental Health Unit in Killarney will open next year. According to Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin, the HSE expects the 40 bed facility will open next Spring. Brendan GriffinDeer Lodge is a purpose built 40 bed mental health services facility, which will provide therapeutic intervention in rehabilitative, and later-life mental health. In a parliamentary question to the Minister for Health, Deputy Griffin sought a time-frame for the unit’s opening, which is located at Cherryfield. In response, the HSE outlined construction of Deer Lodge is now complete. A commissioning group has been established – membership includes staff from Kerry Mental Health Services, residents of the O’Connor Unit, formerly of St Finians, their family members and carers. A meeting was organised with clients from the O’Connor Unit and their families for a walk-through of Deer Lodge in early December and again in January. Their feedback is being considered by the commissioning group. According to the HSE, Kerry Mental Health Services have started the registration process of Deer Lodge as an approved facility with the Mental Health Commission. They envisage the facility will be open by the first quarter of next year.
