The HSE dealt with almost 60 cases of alleged abuse of older people in Kerry last year. Out of 31 city and county areas, Kerry ranked fourteenth in the number of cases of elder abuse referred to the HSE. North Cork had the highest number at almost 130. The HSE’s review for last year also found that 341 people in Kerry availed of training to help those affected by this kind of abuse – among the highest in the country. Nationally, the Health Service Executive, last year, received more than two thousand four hundred referrals of elder abuse to its service. Anyone experiencing elder abuse can call the HSE information line on 1850 24 1850, open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm.
