Granddaughter of Tom Crean to follow his footsteps in Antarctica

Tom Crean SignageThe granddaughter of West Kerry Antarctic explorer Tom Crean is to follow in his footsteps in the Antarctic. Aileen Crean-O’Brien grew up in Tralee and now runs a restaurant in Kenmare. She – accompanied by her two sons and her partner – are embarking on the expedition, 100 years after her grandfather arrived on the shores of South Georgia. Annascaul man Tom Crean served on three expeditions to the Antarctic and was a major figure on Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition. Aileen says, growing up in Tralee, she was inspired by her legendary grandfather – and says there’s a glacier in Antarctica called ‘Crean’s Glacier’: [audio_player src=””] Tomorrow Aileen and her family are man-hauling a sleigh from Killarney. They’ll be proceeding  up Galway’s Bridge across old Kenmare road, up Main Street to arrive at around 1pm at Tom Crean’s Rest in Kenmare.
