The granddaughter of West Kerry Antarctic explorer Tom Crean is to follow in his footsteps in the Antarctic. Aileen Crean-O’Brien grew up in Tralee and now runs a restaurant in Kenmare. She – accompanied by her two sons and her partner – are embarking on the expedition, 100 years after her grandfather arrived on the shores of South Georgia. Annascaul man Tom Crean served on three expeditions to the Antarctic and was a major figure on Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition. Aileen says, growing up in Tralee, she was inspired by her legendary grandfather – and says there’s a glacier in Antarctica called ‘Crean’s Glacier’: [audio_player src=”http://media.radiokerry.ie/mediamanager/embed/audio/55277/medium/”] Tomorrow Aileen and her family are man-hauling a sleigh from Killarney. They’ll be proceeding up Galway’s Bridge across old Kenmare road, up Main Street to arrive at around 1pm at Tom Crean’s Rest in Kenmare.
