A Tralee man has won a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Brendan O’Connell from Oakview, Tralee has taken gold in the 800 metre free style swimming event with a time of 11:17:06. This is in addition to his fourth place ribbon in the 1,500m open water swimming event earlier this week. Brendan is 29 years old and a member of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club. On the final day of competition Team Ireland athletes won six gold, five silver and five bronze, finishing the 2015 Special Olympics. This leaves them with a final medal tally of 26 gold, 29 silver, 31 bronze, 31 personal bests and 43 placement ribbons. Team Ireland return home on Tuesday.
