Fisheries representative warns of battle ahead for Irish fishermen in UK waters

Britain’s signalled withdrawal from the London Fisheries Convention could have disastrous implications for Irish fisherman, a Kerry industry representative has warned.

Lorcán Ó Cinnéide of the irish Fish Processors’ and Exporters’ Association says the announcement signals a negative intent about future fishing activity in UK waters beyond the 12-mile limit where Irish fishermen have been active for 45 years.

Mr Ó Cinnéide was reacting to the announcement by British environment secretary, Michael Gove, that Britain would withdraw from the convention that grants rights to six neighbouring states, including Ireland, to fish within six to 12 miles of each others’ coasts.

Mr Ó Cinnéide says the bigger issue concerns future arrangements in UK waters, where Irish fishermen catch mackerel, prawns and white fish and the EU needed to be united for what would be a dirty game.
