A file’s being prepared for the DPP after a young man barricaded himself into a house in Killarney on Saturday. The 18-year-old had shut himself into a house at Ardshanavooly Estate that morning. Gardaí held negotiations with the young man and the situation was resolved peacefully, several hours after the barricade began. Gardaí were called to the scene at 11am on Saturday where the young man and another person were in the house. The other individual left the dwelling and gardaí including an on scene commander, negotiators and the Regional Response Unit remained at the scene. Ardshanavooly Estate was sealed off while gardaí negotiated with the man. After more than seven hours of negotiation, the situation was resolved peacefully shortly after 6.30pm. Gardaí had requested a media blackout during the standoff. The young man was detained under the Mental Health Act at Killarney Garda Station. It’s understood he’s now in University Hospital Kerry. Garda Superintendent Flor Murphy says a file’s being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. He says gardaí had the required expertise to deal with the incident and paid tribute to officers at the scene for their handling of a sensitive situation. The Samaritans may be contacted any time at 116 123.
