Sinn Fein spokesperson on the Marine Martin Ferris, has echoed the statement of his colleague MEP Liadh Ni Riada on her disappointment at the fishing quota deal secured by Minister Simon Coveney. Deputy Ferris welcomed that there is to be increase in prawn quota and also a ten per cent increase in whitefish, amounting to 36,886 tonnes. However he said “while we have to be aware of maximum sustainable yield to protect stocks; more could have been done for Ireland”. Deputy Ferris also expressed concern about a bi-lateral agreement between Norway and the EU, where Norway gets 400,000 tonnes of blue whiting quota, the majority of which he says will come from Irish waters.
