Farming organisations have been reacting to a tax demand from Revenue on Kerry milk suppliers.
Around 400 out of 3,400 suppliers got letters from Revenue yesterday issuing them with tax bills for patronage shares given in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Revenue values each so called patronage share issued in 2011 at €65, €75 in 2012 and €90 in 2013.
It is understood some farmers have got bills of tens of thousands of euro.
The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association says it has been receiving many calls from hugely concerned Kerry suppliers in a year that has already been tremendously difficult for dairy farmers.
ICMSA President John Comer says they are currently examining the position and will be seeking further clarification from Revenue.
Meanwhile, the Irish Farmers’ Association is also planning to write to Revenue to seek clarity.
It says it is working with Kerry Co-Op, Revenue and accountants on the matter.
